HANA server for non-production - CPU choice

I am building a system to use as non-production development and test platform for SAP HANA applications, targeting Business One.

SAPs documentation states the minimum hardware requirements are quad core Intel Xeon E5 CPUs. Are Xeon CPU's named specifically just because this is what's certified and supported, or does HANA use specific CPU optimisations not found on other types of x86 CPUs? If I used i5 or AMD CPUs would HANA fail to run correctly? Is quad-core really necessary for development?

I am not too concerned with performance issues (unless extreme) as long as it runs stably, and won't require/expect support from SAP.
