Based on your requirement description, it sounds like you want to use a summary scorecard as an at-a-glance launchpad for more detailed information and I think this is quite a valid scenario. In order to provide further implementation guidance it would be helpful if you could clarify a little more how you've set up your POC. Here are my initial questions:
1. When you say you've "Pulled in a Panel, then placed a Grid", do you mean you've put the Grid inside the Panel?
2. When you say "then in each grid I pulled in the Tabstrip", this seems to imply you have more than one grid, unlike the comment in point 1 which suggests one grid only. Can you clarify?
3. How many data sources do you have? Is it one for each Status Indicator or one for each measure, or some other combination?
4. In your POC screenshot, how have you set up the indicator ("Stop light")?
